IBM brings hybrid-cloud app services to z/OS mainframes

To build z/OS infrastructure instances for cloud app testing and development, use Big Blue's Wazi-as-a-service.

In order to provide a cloud environment for application development and testing, IBM has created a service for its mainframe customers.

When developing and testing z/OS application components in a virtualized, containerized environment, Wazi-as-a-service can be used to build instances of the z/OS infrastructure. Red Hat OpenShift on x86 hardware would be used to run the instances. Additionally, the service offers z/OS system access and connects with contemporary source-code hosting services like GitHub and GitLab.

According to IBM, Wazi-as-a-service cannot be utilised for production workloads, refactoring, or re-engineering existing z/OS-based programmes with the goal of re-platforming them.

The service allows for the self-provisioning of z/OS systems in virtual server instances (VSI) within the IBM Cloud's Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), which can be used for testing and development. It is capable of controlling computing, storage, and networking resources.

Alan Peacock, general manager of IBM Cloud Delivery & Operations, stated in a blog that the service can start up z/OS virtual servers in six minutes or fewer. You can either utilise a pre-installed stock image or, under the IBM Cloud's Virtual Private Cloud environment, extract components from an on-premises system and deploy a bespoke image onto the virtual server.
This environment, which runs in the IBM Cloud and is logically isolated and highly secured, does away with the need for accessing resources to wait.

Developers may begin testing much earlier in the development lifecycle thanks to isolated development environments and DevSecOps testing technologies, according to Peacock. "The virtual server running on genuine zSystems hardware offers up to 15x higher performance than equivalent x86 products," the company claims. With the help of this virtual server, you can hasten software release cycles and raise software quality.

Customers must be approved by IBM sales in order to use the service, which is not generally accessible.

Recent packages that IBM has made available to better integrate the Big Iron into the cloud include WAZI as a service. The IBM Z and Cloud Modernisation Stack 2022.1.1 service, which provides pay-per-use access to industry-standard tools to modernise z/OS applications, was just released.

The service supports z/OS Connect, which makes use of a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) interface to integrate and connect with current applications in order to make Z applications and data part of a hybrid cloud approach.

In order to build, modernise, deploy, and manage applications, data, and infrastructure, it also supports z/OS Cloud Broker, which integrates z/OS-based services and resources into Red Hat OpenShift.
